From ancient Mesopotamia to your bedroom
The First Plucked Strings
In ancient Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq), carved stone tablets depict people playing lute-like instruments. These early ancestors of the guitar had a long neck and a body that resonated sound — the core DNA of every guitar ever made.
The Oud & the Lute Arrive in Europe
Arab musicians brought the "oud" (Arabic for "wood") to Spain during the Moorish occupation. European craftsmen adapted it into the "lute," which became the rock star instrument of the Renaissance — played in courts, taverns, and everywhere in between.
The Guitar Takes Shape
Spain gave birth to the 4-course (4 pairs of strings) guitar — the "guitarra latina." Smaller and louder than the lute, it spread across Europe rapidly. By 1600, a 5-course guitar was the instrument of the streets, accessible to everyone, not just royalty.
Six Strings & a Star is Born
Italian and Spanish luthiers settled on the 6-string configuration we know today. Fernando Sor became the first "guitar superstar," composing and performing to packed concert halls across Europe. The guitar was officially taken seriously as a concert instrument.
Antonio Torres Changes Everything
Antonio de Torres Jurado redesigned the classical guitar's internal bracing (the "fan bracing" system), creating a larger body with more volume and projection. His design is still the template for every classical guitar made today — nearly 170 years later.
The First Electric Guitar
The "Frying Pan" — a Hawaiian lap steel guitar — became the first commercially produced electric guitar. Musicians could now be heard over an entire orchestra. Rock and roll was inevitable.
Leo Fender & Les Paul Rewrite History
Leo Fender's Stratocaster (1954) and Gibson's Les Paul defined the electric guitar era. Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, and Eric Clapton turned the instrument into the symbol of an entire cultural revolution. Nothing was ever the same again.
